Four Useful Tips for Reducing Caregiver Stress when Caring for an Elderly Relative

Useful Tips for Reducing Caregiver Stress when Caring for an Elderly

Being a caregiver is one of the world's most stressful yet thankless roles. So then, it should come as no surprise to learn that caregiver stress is a real problem that needs tackling and fast.

Caring for an elderly relative or loved one can be challenging, regardless of how mentally strong and resilient you are. This is why it is crucial to know the signs of caregiver burnout and act upon them to avoid the problems worsening.

Caregivers tend to prioritize other people's health above their own. While elderly relatives may indeed require extra care and attention, that does not mean that you should neglect your health and wellbeing.

If left untreated, caregiver fatigue can lead to mental health issues, physiological issues such as high blood pressure, a suppressed immune system, a heightened risk of heart attack, and other cardiovascular problems.

To ensure none of the above happens to you if you are looking after an elderly loved one, here are four tips for reducing caregiver stress.

Set time aside for you

For many, caregiving is a full-time occupation, but even so, that doesn't mean that you can't enjoy time for yourself.

Despite working full-time jobs, people still get time off, and the same principle should be applied here to avoid caregiver burnout.

Make arrangements to ensure that the recipient of your caregiving has everything they need, and make time for yourself to do the things you enjoy. Whether this is reading a book, taking a walk, seeing friends, spending time with family, or anything else, make sure you enjoy some you time.

Don't be afraid to ask for help

If you are struggling to care for an elderly relative, don't suffer in silence. Instead, reach out and ask for help.

No matter your personal circumstances, there are always caregiving resources in place, not to mention financial aid and assistance. If you are legally entitled to financial assistance as a caregiver, don't let pride get in the way of accepting this help. This is the equivalent of cutting your nose off to spite your face.

There are forums, helplines, and all manner of organizations in place to help people in your position, so if you need the help, make sure you reach out and ask for it.

Ensure you set boundaries

Caring for an elderly loved one can be mentally and physically demanding, and sometimes there will be times when you need to just say no.

If you wish to avoid caregiver fatigue, it's essential to learn to say no and to set boundaries. Unfortunately, there may be instances where the recipient of your caregiving makes unreasonable requests or demands. Whether these are made out of malice or naivety doesn't matter. All that matters is that you are not obliged to say yes.

If you don't want to do something, forget everybody else's feelings and just say no.

Only provide the care that you are able to provide

Finally, in order to ensure you avoid caregiver burnout, make sure you know your limitations and only provide the care that you are able to provide.

If you have other responsibilities, don't neglect them to focus on your caregiving, and certainly don't try to juggle both. Instead, find a solution that allows you to do both while still making time for yourself.

Rather than trying to do everything for your loved one, instead, find ways of helping them become more independent and make their life easier. That way, their quality of life improves, as will yours, substantially reducing your risks of caregiver stress.
